Postcard 1
This is the barn I grew up playing in, it was like a playground to me. But now it is old, falling apart, and is just unsafe to be in now. I wanted to depict how metaphorically "the sun has set" on the barn being my own personal little playground. The idea of it being a playground is now in the past. The barn is in the daytime while sky is a starry night, this is an unnatural occurrence. A slide is something you normally find in a playground not attached to a barn. It is no longer the barn I used to know and play in. We also get a sense of loneliness from the image, the barn is alone, in the dark, and surrounded by the carnage of the structures that used to be beside it.
Postcard 2
This barn is around a hundred years old and used to be surrounded by another barn and other structures that were built around the same time, but now, after all these years it is the only structure left standing. I wanted to explore why, out of all the other structures, this specific barn is left standing. The two replicas of the barn in the background represent the structures that used to be there. The two barns in the back seem to look forward from the past to the barn in the present, representing what used to be, but is not anymore. This idea is also reinforced by the remains of the past structures on the right.
Postcard 3
I grew up in playing in this barn and it has always meant a lot to me. I use the image of this barn in a lot of my art work and have always been fascinated by it. I wanted to explore how I am, in a sense, glorifying the barn, while in reality, it is just an old barn. The barn is on a cliff overlooking the water from the clouds, as a dragon approach. This gives it a fantasy feel, like the barn is a castle or is enchanted. The color purple is often a color associated with royalty, enhancing the idea of the barn being a castle. The barn almost seems to have a magical quality to it.
Postcard 4
This barn used to house livestock in the bottom stalls, protecting them from the element, and in the loft farmers stored hay to feed to the animals. The barn used to support life, now at around a hundred years old, the animals are gone and barn is no longer in use and is falling apart. The phrase "we all die in the end" fits the barn, in the sense that it used to support and protect life, outlasted all of the other structures around it, and now it is, in a way, dying. It has lost its purpose and now just sits as its health disintegrates. It is only a matter of time before it reaches the same fate as the structures that had the same purpose.

I’m not sure I understand the concept of the second one with repetition. I really enjoy your third postcard since it really shows the fantasy aspect and how you envision the space and how it has inspired your artwork.
ReplyDeleteI think to emphasize the age of the barns you could have removed saturation as you go backwards to simulate age, this would also create a gradation-like pathway for your eye.
DeleteI think that the design and concept in the third piece is very strong because of the juxtaposition of an old barn and the idea of a castle or fantasy setting. I think that the way the incorporated the background is really realistic, and I almost believe the scene. I think this idea is the strongest, as well, because it really rethinks the idea of what others see when they look at the barn.
ReplyDeleteI really like the metaphorical meaning behind postcard #1. The symbolical meaning connecting to your childhood and using a slide (as a playground) works great! My favorite postcard is #3. I like how it represents a castle and your explanation of why you view it this way. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job on all your postcards! But in particular I really liked number 3.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, your description for this image is what put me over the edge on it. While I felt that the barn sitting on the side of the cliff with the fog around it was a really cool look alone, you admitting that you glorify it and wanted to make it seem like a castle was what I really loved about this image.
4 rating!
1. Out of the four I really enjoyed your first postcard the most. It had a very nice personal touch and got the point across really well.
ReplyDelete2. You did a really great job bringing in the night time sky and making that look really believable and also really beautiful.
3. The nice simple nice of the image is made really fun with the slide to really emphasize your past fun experiences with it and made it very playful.
Great connection to memory! Strong over all theme and displayed deep thinking all throughout. Beautiful image quality. Of the four I think the repetition card was the least strong conceptually and visually, and the barn on the sea cliff was the most visually interesting. Would have liked to see some more diversity image wise (as 3 of the farm shared the same base image). Like maybe the inside of the barn, up-close images of objects inside the barn, etc. Visually the text needed to stand out a little more. Over all nice fluid theme tying everything together.

ReplyDeleteI think that the idea of glorifying the barn and putting it in a fantasy setting really works. It suggests the idea of fantasy and how we view things as children. The fantasy part is effective especially when you talk about how you used to play in the barn as a child. It seems like something out of a child’ s imagination.
I really like the third postcard. The concept and scene were very strong to me since I like some fantasy stories.
ReplyDeletevisually i liked the first image, the background really makes the barn pop. I think it mightve been a bit more convincing if you hd adjusted the lighting and added a shadow to the slide.
ReplyDeleteI liked your transform photo and it gave a great depiction of a fantasy scene. The colors and the overall quality of the photo it is done really well. Thinking of what it could be and what you thought it was when you were a kid was a great idea.
ReplyDeleteHer images were very creative, I like that she used the same theme of the barn in each postcard. Because it’s a familiar place to her she was able to illustrate the different ways in which she sees it. The third postcard with the dragon had a lot of depth and was cohesive with her theme.
ReplyDeleteI like how you consistently used the barn in every image as opposed to using different parts of your location. I also really liked the way you depicted your fantasy scene in the third image.
